Pro-crast-i-nation

hehe… sorry it's been such a long time, I wasn’t very motivated to write much.

I’ve been doing French and Exercise and Cooking and Singing and procrastinating daily and it all caught up to me and I got stressed and didn’t really feel like writing, and that was something I could put off, so I did.

But now I’m back, and to talk about Procrastination… kinda, because like I said, I haven't really wanted to write that much.

We all know what it is, and have all done it before, putting things off for a bit too long before realizing we really should clean out the fridge before it gets wayyyyy too out of hand. Wait…

But in any case, there is also a spectrum of procrastination. There are people we’ve dubbed “procrastinators” people that continuously put things off until the very last second.

And then there's just magical people — people that get things done as soon as they need to be. These kids in school usually become the teachers' pet or that annoying friend that begs you to do your own homework because you really should stop putting it off! Sure, they are a great influence, but sometimes you can’t help but wonder how in the heck they find the willpower to finish everything so quickly.

I’m one of those people… it's true! I finished my assignments the minute they are assigned, usually finishing my homework during the lecture so I don’t have to do it when I get home. I prefer getting work done as soon as possible, making sure to make my bed as soon as I get up, and getting up the second my eyes are open.

I’m not here to brag though. I’m here to try and share why and how I’m able to do this, so maybe if you’re a notorious procrastinator you can find a way to get things done if not fast, faster. So, without further ado, here are

My tips to getting things done ASAP

Make lists

When you are trying to finish a big project, always always always make a list of everything that needs to get done. These can be simple bullet lists or full-out ledgers of steps and reminders for you. On that note, make reminders for yourself so you put time aside to get things done. A great example of a to do list is this:

Priority Matrix

This to-do list makes it easy for you to track when you are not quite finished and when you are, tracking your progress along the way… speaking of which:

Track Progress

Even if planning ahead isn't really your thing, I promise you you will thank me later. Keep a simple elegant monthly planner that's small and portable, or a full-out sticker-covered daily planer (like “The Happy Planner”, my personal favorite!) When you track your progress, you get a sense of accomplishment just for completing a small part of a big project. Taking the time to plan 15 min writing sessions a day for a few weeks ahead of the date your essay is due is a nice way to break up the work and keep yourself going, getting a set amount of work done eat day or week.

Reward Yourself!

When you finish something (or a big section of an even bigger project) make sure you reward yourself! Take yourself out to get a smoothie, get that haircut you wanted, or take some time to hang out with friends and give yourself an actual break away from all your work.

Take Your Time

Make sure to take regular breaks (especially as a student!) when working on a big project. Cleaning out the fridge doesn't sound very fun when you picture three hours of nasty moldy food, so when it gets a little too gross for you, take a break and get some fresh air.

Taking your time is not and should not be procrastinating. If you find yourself taking too long breaks, set a timer when the time comes, and remind yourself that good things take time.

Stay nerdy y’all!
